On the heels of its 60th Anniversary, C. Erickson & Sons finds itself with two more reasons to celebrate.

A previous fifteen-time recipient of the GBCA's Construction Excellence Award, Erickson was honored to again be selected as one of 2014's distinguished winners. This year, Erickson's prize-winning projects were Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's new state-of-the-art ObGyn Clinic at 833 Chestnut Street (Best Institutional / Industrial Project Under $10 Million), and law firm Ballard Spahr, LLP's high-end corporate restack at 1735 Market Street (Excellence in Craftsmanship.)

Thomas Jefferson University and Ballard Spahr are only the latest in a long list of Erickson projects honored by GBCA, dating back to the event's inception. They join previous honorees such as law firm Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads, LLP (1998) and most recently Pew Charitable Trusts (2013.) Along the way, notable clients have included The Franklin Institute Science Museum (twice honored in 2003 and 2009) and PECO Energy for its outstanding Green Roof (Honorable Mention, 2009.)

But enough about us. Get to know a little bit more about the projects recognized in 2014, and the clients who made it all possible.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital | ObGyn Clinic

Erickson transformed 50,200 square feet of concourse and sub-basement space at 833 Chestnut into Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's beautiful, state-of-the-art Reproductive Medicine Practice and Teaching Facility. In addition to patient waiting, changing and exam areas, work included the installation of new ADA-compliant elevators, plus clinical amenities such as sonography, ultrasound, diagnostic, genetic counseling and phlebotomy suites.

Additional to this was the massivity of the mechanical, plumbing and utility work necessary in the building's sub-basement, an undertaking performed with only two feet of overhead clearance in some areas.

Ballard Spahr, LLP | Corporate Restack

This eighteen-month, four-phased project called for a 190,000 square foot renovation to Ballard Spahr's Philadelphia headquarters. Eschewing the look of a traditional law firm, Francis Cauffman's design opened up the renovated space from wall-to-wall, creating clear sightlines and maximizing the entire office's exposure to both natural sunlight and the city's stunning skyline views.

Of the firm's eight floors, six are now devoted to attorney offices and workspaces, one to the administrative staff, and one -- the 48th floor -- to a new, high-end conferencing center. Each floor is equipped with its own social "Hub", including a small cafe and pantry, situated alongside seating areas intended to invite social team collaboration.

As always, C. Erickson & Sons extends its thanks to the GBCA for the honor of these awards, and its sincere gratitude to the clients, architects, and loyal workforce who make our continued success a reality.
